Notes
- Portal is AWESOME.
- Wine 0.9.47 contains the Tahoma font built in, but contains some kind of regression that fucks up pixel shaders that are used for the portal effect. Bummer. Use 0.9.46 for now.
- You just upgraded? Check your
/var/cache/apt/archives dir.
- OSS is not possible, because Steam has to be running, and it will grab the sound card first. As per this thread, "I've changed the Audio Tab in winecfg to use the Alsa drivers, with Hardware Accleration set to Emulation, the Sample Rate set to 44100, Bits per sample set to 16, and Driver Emulation checked."
- Apparently, playing an ogg or something that grabs sound while Steam starts up can also help.
- And check up on a UseGLSL? reg key for wine - it may be good, it may be obsolete info.
- http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Command_line has info on getting things running via command line rather than navigate through Steam, which handily lets you set video mode etc.
- -dev is a nice switch: it doesn't load the 3D map background for the menu, and enables the console.
Keep away from infants and small children.
